Literature Text

“Look at this, Paulie,” Ferguson said, as he stopped at a medieval painting. It was a portrait of a man dressed in fancy garb, jewels adorning his tunic and hands. His face was oval-shaped, eyes nicely set. The lips formed a thin line, suggesting apathy. His eyes did not sparkle, but were dull and lifeless.

“It must be terrible to be royal,” Ferguson joked. He looked at Paulina and expected her to laugh, but her face was somber. She was lost in the painting and in her own world.
She studied his features: chestnut brown hair--roughly cut, unusually thin shoulders, and hazel eyes. His features were clean, but not of someone spoiled. He seemed to have done his share of work, whether or not it was asked of him. Beneath all this was a melancholy air. If only he would smile and break out of his dark cage, Paulina thought. Her friends called her sentimental and dreamy. She did not try to deny it—it was true, but something else was also true: she could read people like a book.

“Rather enchanting, isn’t it?” said someone beside her. She turned to find a curator who had approached her. Most of the people who came barely spent ten seconds at each piece, and here Paulina was for three solid minutes.

“It’s fascinating,” she replied, “who is it?”

“The painter didn’t give a name. He just titled it ‘young prince’,” the curator said informatively, though only repeating what the little gold plaque beneath the picture said.

“Aren’t there any theories about it?” Paulina persisted.

“One historian suggested that it was Prince Steven in 1578 because of the ring on his right index finger,” she pointed as she spoke, “but it’s been disputed that a ring like that was likely from the Eldon territories. The man portrayed here doesn’t seem to match any of their royalty.”

Paulina nodded slowly as her only response. She looked back upon the painting, now filled with mystery. “So what happened to him?” she thought.
I didn't have space to give descriptions of their surroundings. I'm trying not to give away where they are at the beginning anywayz so...that's tough. But I did describe the painting. ;p
